Rubenesque Sandwich R&D Kitchen - Lunch Yesterday

Still love this sandwich (grilled corn rye with THE most tender and delectable corned beef layered with slightly sweet, mayo infused slaw). This one very filling sandwich that kept me eating until there wasn't a scrap left. Also the fries were hot and perfect if you like them skinny and cooked perfectly in paper cones.

(R&D is one of the Houston's / Bandera family of restaurants). Montana Ave. just west of 14th Street on the N side of Montana).

  1. Yum, I'm a big fan of this sandwich, too. Also wanted to note that their mimosas and excellent bloody marys are $5 during the day on the weekends!

Molly, thanks for reminding me that my wife's blood mary was less than my stella artois! Just be aware that if you want ice in your bloody mary you have tell them upfront because they make them chilled but without ice.

Yes, good point. If you happen to like them on the spicy side, they're happy to bring you a bowl of freshly grated horseradish to add as you like.

    2. I'm going to have to try that...its hard to get away from that awesome burger of theirs...and their warm potato salad is excellent! so good, just hard to get a seat at times.

We went fairly late in the day on Sunday - maybe 1:40 or so and did have to wait about 10 minutes, but the day was beautiful and the people watching was good. And my wife always has the burger.

      2. I don't care for their corned beef as it's really not Jewish deli style. I really like what I believe they refer to as "pulled pork" which while not really "pulled pork" is delicious none the less. Their beer is always frosty cold which is a big plus in my book.

I don't find it very "pulled pork" like (which to me is much more of a shredded style). I like it because it is very, very tender and has a wonderful flavor that plays off well against their slightly, too sweet slaw, so the combo of the two tastes work well for me.

        2. Although the Rubenesque was very good, I find it way over priced.I mean if I am paying $17 for a sadwich I expect some french fries. I also expect that my french fries fill up the whole cup, not have paper in the bottom of the cup and fries on top of it. Who are they trying to fool. It upsets me when restaurantuers treat customer so condescendingly.

Unfortunately the prices undoubtedly reflect what it takes to make rent on Montana and have the number of servers and other help that R&D Kitchen has and pay the workers comp bill which has got to be ginormous.

I didn't feel the amount of fries was skimpy, mos likely because of how filling the Rubenesque sandwich is. We were both full when we left, and the price of our lunch at R&D was no more, and probably a little less than we end up spending at 17 Street Cafe - our other "go to" place on Montana.

          2. I've raved about this sandwich several times on CH...delish!
