Killer Brats in Sheboygan

Just returned east after a trip taking our daughter back to college in Wisconsin. Air fare and tuition bill made it more of a roadfood tour than a linen tablecloth visit. One recommendation from Roadfood.com led to a visit to The Charcoal Inn in Sheboygan for their fresh grilled bratwurst sandwich....actually their double brat, split in half, charcoal grilled, still incredibly moist and flavorful. Brats are made fresh at a nearby local butcher (second or third generation) and served on a fresh baked Portugese roll.....served with the works of sliced pickles, mustard, grilled onions in lieu of fresh onions and then wrapped and served in a waxed paper wrap that becomes your plate as you peel it back and dig in. Incrediblely well seasoned, well blended pork, the double gives a lot of brat to bread ratio and for less than the price of a McDonald or Wendy burger, yup, less than the price of one of their $6 burgers we had access to a tremendous meal from the heartland. Ok, their fried onions (very crisp beer batter like a fine tempura) were superb and for dessert shared one of their dessert 'torte' tiramisu like sponge cake with sweetened coffee, chocolate shavings and tons o' real whipped cream and large enough to share for 3. The place is a neighborhood luncheonette from the 1960's and it serves superb food. The men at an adjacent table were tackling the grilled steak sandwich special which they like as a change of pace from the great brats and told us the grilled, sliced ribeye with onions, garlic and steak sauce were equally brilliant. You can't beat it when you end up with such delicious, fresh local food and get out for $25. for three that included a $4. tip.
