Good recs, except I have to disagree on one point. I have never met anyone with anything good to say about the food at El Coyote -- the only positives I've heard are for the bar, and that's not exactly a talking point for someone with kids. They're not too young to start learning the difference between good and bad food.

re: maxzook
The food is average, cheap and the kids seem to love it. The parents can have a margarita, and they wanted something inexpensive. I live a couple of blocks away and we go there because it is inexpensive and they will make me what I want. I don't expect high quality food when I go there, but it is decent. If I want to drive futher there are a lot of other places I like and would recommend.

Only a mile or so from Universal City, Caioti Pizza Cafe in Universal City is that rarest of places, kid-friendly but also compatible with adults. Excellent menu of pizzas, salads and sandwiches from the late owner/chef EdLaDou, Spago's first pizza chef and designer of the CPK menu.
