House of Shields closing?

kresge86 Jan 10, 2010 07:25 AM

I just heard through the grapevine that the House of Shields will be closing. Anyone else have more information about this?

I knew the previous proprietor, and the landlord essentially decided he didn't like them and ended the lease over a technicality. The House of Shields was reconstituted in nearly identical form with a new proprietor, so I'd expect it will stay about the same with a change in visible staff.

If it isn't a historical landmark, it should be. The bar & urinals are original, and there is a "speakeasy" room downstairs that extends out under the sidewalk toward the street that dates to prohibition.

Well, the last time the building owner kicked out the tenants was around 2001. Hopefully the situation is not as dire as would be implied by this quote from Eater SF: "the century-old House of Shields could be nearing the end of its run on New Montgomery Street."
