Colored Sugar

Does anyone know where I can purchase colored sugars to trim the rims of cocktail glasses? Thanks for any input, FoiGras

The Dean and Deluca always has a bunch of coarse colored sugars. I have used them on cocktail rims, and they look great. Also, not too expensive. I think they have pink, yellow, blue, green, red, white/clear, etc. Lots to choose from!

I've seen lots of colored sugars at the Amish market in Germantown.

I buy a lot of sprinkles, dragees, and fancy sugar crystals at the Amish Market in Easton, MD.
Same stuff as Sur La Table, Wilton, etc. at a fraction of the price. No elegant packaging, but who cares.

I can color plain granulated sugar easily but can't do it with large crystals and sanding sugar.

Our Amish market has colored sugars too, so if you have an Amish market near you, it sounds like that would be a great bet.

Online, the Baker's Catalogue (from King Arthur Flour) has many colors of sugar. But really, if you go to Michael's or any place that sells cake decorating supplies you can get all sorts of colors of food coloring. Then, as MakingSense says, it is a cinch to color your own. You can use liquid food coloring, or the paste coloring (put a tiny dab of the paste coloring on a toothpick then mix it thoroughly into granulated sugar. start with a tiny dab then add more coloring if needed)

World Market used to sell them, with different flavors. I haven't looked lately.

Thanks for your replies. I will definitely attempt to make my own.

I've never been to Sur La Table, but it's on my "to-go-to" list. I used to shop at Le Gourmet Chef in Columbia Mall, but noticed that the shop no longer exists and has been replaced by a sports memorabilia-type store. FoiGras

Colored granulated sugar is very easy to make if you want custom colors. Also much cheaper than buying it in fancy shops.
Put a small amount of sugar (1/4 c) in a jar with a tight-fitting lid. Add ONE drop of food color. Shake the jar like crazy. That one drop will distribute itself all over the sugar crystals and you'll have colored sugar for your needs.
If the color is too dark, add more sugar and shake some more. Too light? Add another touch of color.
Cheap and easy. And you have the ingredients on hand....

Over the holidays I found lots of different bottles of colored sugar at Sur La Table. You can also find some basic colors at Safeway---red, green, blue etc.
