Iannelli's in White Plains: very good red-sauce Italian
Recently moved to White Plains, right near this restaurant/pizzeria at 359 Mamaroneck Avenue. While I was busy setting up my kitchen, I hit this place up for dinner a few times.
If you're looking for an authentic Italian dining experience, Iannelli's is not it. But for red-sauce, Italian-American fare, this place is good. Real good, actually.
Had the escarole and bean soup: very hearty and hits the spot on a cold night. The pasta dishes are served in huge portions; can easily feed two. Too often, meat lasagna is a leaden dish at restaurants like these, weighed down by globs of rubbery cheese. But Iannelli's lasagna was lighter, with just the right amount of ricotta and mozzarella. But most important was the quality of Iannelli's red sauce. It tasted like tomatoes - no thick, pasty stuff here. Also sampled the baked ziti and the pasta primavera, both were good as well. The primavera veggies tasted fresh and weren't overcooked.
Also ordered in a plain pizza pie one night and was pleasantly surprised. No, it' wasn't artisanal, but it had a thin, crispy crust and that tasty tomato sauce. A solid street slice, better than both Nicky's and Mario's further up Mamaroneck Avenue, IMO.
Prices are reasonable (entrees between $10-$20) especially for the size of the dishes. It's definitely going to be in my regular takeout rotation.
