The title says it all! I just discovered that I love homemade cranberry sauce and want to make some before next Fall. Thanks if you can help!

Is there some reason that you can't buy the ones in the grocery store?

This is definitely a possibility, but with so many cranberry farms, why not find them locally? My mother in-law has a friend that owns a cranberry bog that sells to Ocean Spray, and she makes the best cranberry sauce I have ever had from fruit that she gets from her friends farm. There is nothing like it! Fresh from NJ! -mJ

I struck out at both Wegman's and Whole Foods, so I just wondered if they're out of season. I'd love to buy the farm fresh kind if available, but at this point I'm just looking for some decent quality berries to get my fix!

They're out of season, so I don't think farm fresh is going to happen. I would bet money that Trader Joe's has them in the frozen section. Honestly, I have used frozen and fresh cranberries when I make cranberry sauce and you couldn't tell the difference. It's totally freezer-friendly.

I saw some at TJs but they have added sugar. I'm going to keep my eyes open for plain frozen berries at other stores.

glutton is right. Cranberries are harvested in the fall and are out of season right now. I would check out TJ. BTW: I routinely drive through where the cranberry bogs are during the season and it is really rare to find them for sale at the local farm markets in the area. I think much of the crop is grown for commercial use and is already sold pre harvest. You might want to check out the list of farm markets on the NJ State website to see if any markets listed will sell the cranberries in season.

I will try this next year. For now, I'll be happy if I can find them frozen. South Jersey has so many different supermarkets that I will plan to check them until I find one that carrie the frozen version.

I buy them frozen in the freezer section of Kings Supermarket. They are with the other frozen fruits. Great and easy recipe for a basic cranberry sauce is on the back of the package.

I saw frozen ones today at the Whole Foods in Middletown. I would think all would have them.

Thanks for the tip! I will see if my Whole Foods can get them or if the person who helped me and I missed them on first check!

This won't help you now, but every year in October, we go to the Chatsworth Cranberry Festival, which turns the whole town into a large country fair. Most of the town's berries go to Ocean Spray (the NJ plant is in town) but there are always several people selling fresh cranberries, and we buy a year's supply, make a batch of sauce, and freeze the rest. Can't prove they're better than what you buy in the supermarket, but it's definitely more fun!
