Need Suggestions for a Beautiful Gourmet Gift Basket in the $500 Range

Dear NYC Hounds:

Can you give this L.A. Hound some recommendations? I need to order a really special, gourmet gift basket for someone in Manhattan. The price range is just under $500. Any suggestions will be very much appreaciated.

Thank you,
T-D. in L.A.

Thanks to all for the numerous suggestions. I have added all of these purveyors to my files for future reference. I ended up using Chelsea Market Baskets, but only because Citarella required 48 hours advance notice.

      Thank you all, once again,
      T-D.

Chelsea Market Baskets was actually the first one that came to my mind, but for some reason I thought you had to do it all in person. I was just in the store, and the presentation on the baskets/boxes was really top notch. I think you made a really good choice.

Don't have personal experience with their actual gift baskets, but Petrossian has all sorts of nice fine goods. Their website has some gift baskets in your price range. Also has the benefit of being somewhat of an NYC institution.

does it have to be a gift basket? with such a high price tag you might also consider giving the recipient a gift certificate at one of the uber-expensive restaurants in town for a really special, blowout meal.

I would look into the following - maybe check the websites as a start:

          Dean & Deluca
          Citarella
          Zabar's

Some other options - Murray's Cheese and Ideal Cheese. For a Spanish focus, look into Despana, for Italian, Di Palo (though I'm not sure they do gift baskets).

I'd like to second the second round of suggestions. Murray's, Despana, and Di Palo, would all make really lovely baskets.

                Thirding these!

                And adding Russ & Daughters.

Russ & daughters is a great addition to that list. So much so, that I would consider ordering from them, in combination with one of the others.
