getting into Philly earlier now...need recs..does not have to be late night anymore

I posted a few days ago about late night dining. Now we are getting in at 6pm so we could eat anywhere.

If you were 2 guys coming in to Philly for one night before heading to Atlantic City the next day for a four day poker binge where would you dine?

We have one night. Price not an option. Two big dudes.

We like old school, we like new school. We just have one dinner.

Where would be the coolest or most fun place to eat in Philly?

We eat Italian, Steak, Thai, French, Bar Food, High End, whatever!

Thank you for any recommendations.

  1. I would do drinks at Franklin Mortgage & Investments (18th St, just north of Sansom), and dinner at Barclay Prime (modern steakhouse), 18th St. Southeast corner of Rittenhouse Square.

That sounds like heaven to me and a pretty much perfect rec.

    2. village whiskey. oysters, burgers and bourbon ought to put you in the gambling mood.

Great choice of all of the above, actually. But I think Village Whiskey might be extra fun - if you are big guys, then you'll love their burger, which is quite the talk of Philadelphia at the moment. It's a small place, and you'll have to check if they take reservations. But it's centrally located and owned by Jose Garces... the new Iron Chef.

OH MY GOD!!!!! you guys and gals all rock. Village Whiskey looks great and Barclay Prime looks super cool!!!!! Thank you.

They do not take reservations. Be warned that it has been very very difficult to get a table there. You will certainly have to wait during any normal dinner hour, perhaps a long time, maybe over two hours if a Fri or Sat. But, they will take your cell # and call you so you could go drink at Franklin or something while you wait. Since you only have the one night, plan for that and maybe consider a backup plan.

yeah, the burger is heaven on earth, but i waited 45 minutes for a 1.30 lunch (sat around 2.15). barclay prime is banging though and definitely good pre-poker tournament food....

I think Barclay Prime is a good choice, but I'm also going to throw at Distrito. And if you have a free evening in AC, Dock's for amazing seafood and cocktails.

Do any of you think there would be a wait at Village Whiskey on a Wed night around 8:30pm? Can one eat at the bar there?

                      1. re: mcegielski

I went one weeknight and had to wait to even sit at the was within the first few weeks of opening though, so hopefully better now and it's defiitely worth a try! I was alone and gave up after 10 minutes but will definitely get back....hmmmm, maybe lunch on this snowy day!!!

                        1. re: bonappetite

I've only been to VW once, because of the wait times I'd heard of. I walked in at 3 PM on a snow day and was able to sit right down at the bar. By the time we left, it was packed. I think you have to go in between lunch and dinner.
