What is this place? Is it a chain? I tried to find out from their website but quickly got so annoyed by it that I stopped.

It's a burger chain. I am familiar with it from Houston. It has a following just like In-N-Out does. Wikipedia has some background on it.

I grew up in Texas with a Sonic in the neighborhood that is still there 25+years later. I think if you asked most of my family members, they'd tell you the most popular offering at Sonic is their ice. Tiny nuggets in the sodas and limeades and even tinier pebbles in slushes. The Texas Toast grilled cheese has always been a hit and a decent, though not near In-N-Out quality burger. The aforementioned limeades and slushes come in a variety of flavors with the cherry limeade and natural lime slush being very popular amongst my people. Sonic is also known for it s drive up, push-button- curbside service complete with car hops who often wear skates.

good chain burgers, but go for the shakes

The shakes are great, but don't look over the chicken sandwiches either. It's a great favorite of mine, used to drive to Tracy once every few months to go get some Sonic.

So we tried to go yesterday at around 6:30 PM - big mistake. There was a loooong line of cars, just to get into the drive-in bays. We decided to just return another day.

We were incredibly excited when we heard Sonic opened right near us. Sure, their food is pretty mediocre, but their drink selection is great - love those diet strawberry limeades!

Hopefully lines will die down soon and we'll be able to see how this new Sonic is.

So Sonic is about the drinks and shakes. That's good to know. Hayward is a bit too far to go for an average chain burger but the drinks sounds like a good road trip stop option.

I noticed one in American Canyon on Hwy 29 yesterday.
