Mexican Restaurants near Cal State LA?

Hey everyone! I'm planning an outing to see the play, "They Shoot Mexicans, Don't They" next month and wanted to pair it with dinner. Given the name of the play, a Mexican restaurant seemed a good choice for dinner. Since the play will be at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex at Cal State LA, I'd like a recommendation for a Mexican restaurant that is within 5 to 10 minutes driving distance away. Does anyone have any ideas?

Anything with chicken at Taco Room on Valley is good. They have the unbelievably tender stewed white meat chicken with a hint of green chile.

I miss the Taco Room.. use to go there at least 4 times a week when I was going to CSULA....

Manuel's El Tepayec, on Evergreen half a block south of Wabash. Closed Tuesdays. Almost always a short line outside, but worth the wait. Full of locals. Try the Hollenbeck burrito if you're really hungry. Enjoy.

Oh!!! When ever I go to ELAC or Cal State L.A. with friends, we always stopped over at Gallos Grill. An AMAZING mexican grill place, with great food (I love their beef skewers with BIG veggeies and the beef hunks wrapped in THICK bacon), great prices and wonderful patio dining.

Sadly, they had a fire recently and according to a recent post, they are set to re-open on the 1st (If all goes well!) I can not recommend this place enough, but give them a call before the trip down there so you won't be dispointed.

I agree, Gallo's Grill is my favorite restaurant in that area. I also like the chicken brochettes, queso fundido, and their guacamole. Hopefully they will re-open in time for your CSULA event.

Interesting-- it's nearly 5 years after your post, Dommy (I was looking for info on El Tepayec) and when I click on the Gallos Grill link it takes me to Moles La Tia!

Yeah, it's all in the family so to speak... But sadly the Grill has STILL not opened because of sporatic financing... *sigh!!* I love Moles la Tia... I REALLY do (and am so glad they got the proper attention for it!) but honestly, I want my Gallos Grill back... if only for that garden...
