Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in the SF Bay Area (including Berkeley, Oakland, Napa, Sonoma, Marin, and San Jose)

Emeryville: Bailey's On 65th - fresh fruit slushies?

Has anyone tried this place yet? They are closed thru 1/13 for the holidays.

The reviews on yelp are mixed ... there is not much middle ground. Either it is for you or isn't. Some stuff that gets repeated thumbs up are the chocolate cake and Cubano. The bean salad sounds skippable.

One thing that interests me is that the menu lists a different coffee roaster - Roast Coffee Co.

Tea is by Mighty Leaf.

The menu is seasonal relying on local vendors. Some stuff on the current online menu that seems interesting ... sandwiches come with salad

- Marble Rye Toast with truffle salt $3.00
- Tuna Salad - made from fresh tuna with capers and coriander aioli $8.95
- Organic Egg Salad - cage-free Glaum Family Farm eggs $7.95

There seems to be a Cafe Corridor around 65th starting with Actual Cafe, moving on to Tribu Cafe, Bailey's, Cafe Aquarius and ending with ... Starbucks.

Of those I've tried, Cafe Aquarius finishes first ... by a long stretch. However, the others have their charms ... the El Porteno empanadas at Actual Cafe, the rock bottom prices for organic food at Tribu.

I also noticed next door to Actual, one of the spaces for lease noted that it was a restaurant space.

Emeryville: This was my dawning at the Cafe Aquarius - lemon ricotta pancakes, Palio coffee, excellent eclairs and baked goods

Oakland (near Berkeley): Actual Cafe - House-made sodas, egg creams, El Porteno organic empanadas, absolutely wonderful chimichurri sauce and indoor bike parking

Oakland: Tribu Cafe - Member of CSA (Community Supported Agriculture)

    1. I've tried Bailey's just once. Had the cubano and was not impressed. Nothing wrong with it (and I'm no judge of cubano correctness) but it did not leave me craving a repeat. WIth Acquarius, Rotten City, and Actual Cafe nearby (and Tribu next in line) it might be a while before I give it another shot.

It is impressive to see the neighborhood transforming. I've been working in Emeryville since about 2001 and the velocity of change there has been high for a long time and is only now really taking off.

          Thanks for the feedback.

I plan to give the coffee a try when they re-open ... and maybe a fruit slushie

Yes, it is amazing how that area is changing ... in fact, a good stretch of San Pablo ... Pepple's Donuts seems to be opening a retail shop. I know they are not universally loved, but I like those vegan donuts a lot. It would be nice to be able to go in and see the flavors labeled. Most of the time the restaurants serving them aren't clear about the flavors.

Further up in the other direction, Nordic House will be moving into the old San Pablo Poultry location. It seems like there is real activity going on with the restaurant next to Sea Salt ... which I believe is owned by the Sea Salt people.

I feel a new nabe name coming on ... with a nod to a yelper, but my own nomination ... BOOBE - Border of Oakland, Berkeley, Emeryville ... now wouldn't that be something hanging from one of those neighborhood banners ... we could go with the French pronunciation to class it up ... bow-bay
