Babycakes of NYC opened - Downtown Los Angeles Today

Babycakes (from NY) opened today in downtown LA (on 6th Street near Main). I thought that the size of the cupcakes I tried (smaller) and the cake and icing all were topnotch. As you'll note if you look at their website they carry cookies, cupcakes, and brownies which are both gluten-free and vegan varieties Anyone else there today?

  1. I wasn't at the opening today, however, one of my clients had vegan brownie bites
    and chocolate chip cookie dough shipped to me as part of my xmas bonus.
    I have to say that I was very unimpressed and won't be rushing to visit the LA
    branch.

    1. I can't wait to try it. Got the cookbook for Christmas. Love the NY store.

      1. I tried them in NY and loved them! Truly amazing that vegan could actually taste better than a classic cupcake. It's a richer flavor. I'm excited that they came to LA, but can't believe they are all the way downtown. Who can make the schlep?

        1. I used to live in New York and had Babycakes a few times with my celiac girlfriend. I have to say that of all the diet/speciality baked goods that I've tried (I've tried a lot!) these have to be among the worst. The textures are pretty bad and the items just don't taste right. At some point, taking out/replacing too many normal ingredients just doesn't work.

            I don't know. I only had the one devils food cupcake. But it was quite good with a deep, dark chocolate taste and no after taste that I associate (and absolutely hate) with most sweets that aren't full of refined sugar. And the icing was also quite rich and not overly sweet or cloying in the way that a lot of icings can be.

          2. We were there late opening day, only cupcakes and banana bread avail,
            it was fine, similar to what we get when in NYC, and will go back for donuts
            and jam-filled biscuits. BABYCAKES is not for everyone, it's VEGAN baking,
            void of butter, white sugar, white flour, eggs and cream, all ingredients that
            every other highly touted bakery uses in excess. You are what you eat.
            Pleasantly surprised to see the steady stream of LA BABYCAKES customers.
