Huauchinango Mexican Grill (Scottsdale, AZ)

This place looks interesting and I'd like it to try it out, but considering my recent Kebab Palace fiasco, I thought I'd ask here first and see if anyone has been recently. I just want to make sure it's still open and still serving the same type of food!

  1. I've been a couple of times and it's interesting. It has the same look and feel of your average strip mall Mexican place in Phoenix... order at a counter, find your own table, grab your own salsas, watch soccer on the TV, etc.

What's different is that the place specializes in the regional fare of the city that it's named after, which I believe is in the state of Puebla. Thus the menu has both "familiar to gringo items," but also Southern Mexico specialties, such as smothered masa cakes.

I say "interesting" because I'm not versed enough to say if their fare is a good/authentic version of that region's fare and when I've stopped by, I think I was programmed to expect the usual selections for a quick lunch. What I need to do is go there with others and bring an explorative attitude and order a bunch of stuff. It's very inexpensive so there's no risk, and the staff is friendly. They also have a salsa which is the hottest I've had in Phoenix.

Pueblan is one of my favorites... any tacos arabes? Cemitas?
