Best Biryani???

I've been on a quest for great biryani since visiting India about 15 years ago. Most in NYC have disappointed, and are nothing like what I had there.

The best I've found so far is at Sapphire, on Broadway around 63rd - light, lots of herbs with clear distinct flavors, not masked by generic orangey or tomato-y sauce/seasoning. I generally like a veg biryani, as the meat preparation distracts from the qualities of rice, nuts, spices/herbs.

Would love to hear anyone else's recommendations!

The link below cites some of the better candidates around town.

I'm a big fan of the lamb biryani at Swagat (Amsterdam betw. W. 79th/80th). Very satisfying.

The best I have had in NYC is from southern spice out in queens. 143-06 45th Ave flushing. It is a great consistent place and the owner is just an all around nice Guy.

In Manhattan I like a little hole in the wall place downtown, Sangam. At 190 bleecker St.
