An Unbelievable Appetizer at Larkspur
Three of us had another wonderful meal at Larkspur earlier this week. We have come to expect a very high level of food and service in this beautifully understated room and we have not been disappointed.
Desserts were a very tasty Apple Tart, a silky and delicious chocolate Panna Cotta and fresh Cinnamon Donuts with a caramel dipping sauce.
Our entrees were all excellent. One of my dining companions had a fine cod dish and the other had the escolar, which was also excellent. I had a perfectly grilled medium rare pork chop with Anson Mills grits.
Our second course was Mushroom Consomme with lobster dumplings, micro mirepoix and matsutake.
Two appetizers were excellent -- roasted pork belly, which is always a killer at Larkspur, and a crudo of raw tuna and scallop. But the absolute best dish of the evening was the Kobe Beef Carpaccio, served with a lemon vinaigrette, radish, crispy rice, wild micro greens and truffle aioli. I cannot explain how good this was. Unbelievable flavors. Thin rounds of raw beef so buttery that they seemed literally to melt in your mouth. I could have had a few orders of this app as my entree and would have been perfectly satisfied. This is the first time I recall seeing this dish on Larkspur's menu. I certainly hope it is not the last.
Once again, as expected, a simply wonderful dinner at Larkspur.

DD, thanks for the review. We went to Larkspur last Saturday night. As usual ate at the bar because its wines, apps and cheese plate, rather than mains for us at night. The service was fun as well as good. Both Josh and Debra do a great job of pouring and keeping up a conversation. Kevin Furtado, the wine guy, had lots of good advice of what to taste on an upcoming trip to the Loire Valley. And we had an '08 syrah he made in San Ynez, a fine wine with much character. It was interesting to see Thomas (owner) working in the dining room setting plates from the kitchen. He's the guy with the shaved head and a chefs jacket. Having the head guy work along side the crew must be what keeps Larkspur our go to place.
