I read that some Asian vegetarian chefs have figured out how to closely mimick the taste & texture of red meat, chicken & shellfish using vegetarian products made of soy & the like. Any restaurants in OC where the fake meat dishes are really 'worth their salt'?

You mean Happy Veggie? That's on Warner, and it's pretty good, and the owner is part of an interesting religion where she claims she is able to talk to dead people.

I think the Wheel of Life in Irvine has probably the best fake meats I've had around these parts. I've had some fake chicken that was pretty good. personally, am not so fond of the fake shrimp. I believe this restaurant is vegan.

I live in North OC and both veggie restaurants that I go to are unfortunately in LA county.. but they are dang good and worth the drive!!!! The best is Happy Family, I go to the one in Rowland Heights, just off of the 57 freeway, but there is one also in Rosemead. They have these wonderful hand rolls, with an indescribable taste that is excellent. The curry "chicken" is the greatest, I get it almost every time I go, and its really good cold the next day. The fake shrimp dishes are also really good. Their menu has over 800 items on it, so there's plenty to try... The other place I go to is Veggie Bistro, in uptown Whittier. Very good, wonderful vietnamese owners. Wonderful sesame chicken and eggplant curry soup. There is also a restaurant in Cerritos I've been meaning to try, called Vegi Wokery. They are famous for their chicken drumsticks, basically fake chicken on a stick. BTW, my husband and I aren't completely vegetarian. We just like the taste of the fake meats better than real meats sometimes. We go for the taste!!!

Au Lac in Fountain Valley (http://www.aulac.com) and Wheel of Life in Irvine have tasty vegetarian dishes made with "mock meats". My omnivorous friends have liked the dishes they've had there but they say that the flavor, while enjoyable, doesn't reproduce actual meat, poultry, or seafood very accurately.
