Meat lockers in L.A.

My girlfriend bought me an entire pig for Christmas. The pig is currently wandering around a pasture in Santa Barbara until I figure out how to store his delicious carcass. Does anyone know a place that rents meat lockers in central L.A.? I live in Silver Lake, so the closer to that, the better.

    1. I think what you really need is a freezer?

        1. You have the pig processed, and then you freeze the butchered parts. You do not need to "rent" a meat locker.

Call a place like Harmony Farms (http://harmonyfarmsonline.com/services.html ), and ask for a quote. They'll hang it for a few days, knock it down into parts, and deliver it. All you need to do is provide the freezer.

(If you don't have the space for a chest or upright freezer, perhaps a whole pig wasn't the best idea for a present ;-)

            1. Used freezers are pretty cheap on craigslist. I was looking for a farm to get a half pig, but couldn't find many nearby. What's the name of the one in Santa Barbara?

Used freezers on craigslist are usually old freezers. Old freezers are *generally* inefficient. So inefficient, sometimes, that the payback period on a new model is only a year or two before the electricity costs of running an older model come back to haunt you...

                  • I was able to fit 1 boar (appx. 120 #, 60# dressed) into the freezer part of my fridge. This meant I had no space for other frozen items until I ate enough of the meat. I imagine a farm raised pig would be heavier and thus take up more space. Space for a dedicated freezer is tough in a condo.
