Roppongi Local Eats?
Although in a prior post I thought I was going to be staying in Shinjuku, I have recently found out (this morning) that my apartment there will no longer be available and I am now staying at the Oakwood Residence in Roppongi Central.
Any suggestions about the food there? Cheap(er) eats?? Mid-range stuff? Ramen/soba? Yakitorri?? Sushi?? We are two students so the high end restaurants will be out of range for the most part. Any must eats?
Wow, enjoying Tokyo in being wise ! Not sure to answer these ones correctly :
*Some practical precisions : 100yens shop for the little things (after Roppongi Hills on your left from Aoyama Dori), Seijo Ishii open 24/day near Kamiyacho, second hand bicycles will be a hint on your first days in Tokyo…
*Some spot for cheap eats :
Lunch is usually under 1000yens at common places. Want to try a Japanese traditional one, without going too far : the Gu-ya in Nishi-Azabu. I have had there just a “today’s lunch set” with whale deep fried katsu (excellent!) with 3 different sauce, rice, miso soup, tofu with chopped young green leeks, hijiki(seaweed). This lunch is unfortunately not a fix but they have a choice of 7-8 different lunch sets. If there are on the menu, the “Hokke” and “shoga-yaki” might be difficult ones.

Diner, one spot under 100yens, quantity, very tasty soba, classy standing bar, only 6 choices with possibility of options… Diner will be less crowded than lunch at this Soba MINATOYA. http://r.tabelog.com/tokyo/A1308/A130802/13009740/dtlphotolst/

Course from Roppongi (25mn walk) : go down from the GaienHigashi Dori, under expressway, turn left, join the subway station Kamiyacho, then first on the right, on the Atago Temple cross the street and it will be a black corner façade one.
*Some events (many in fact) :
Soho Cinema 2010
Media Art Festival in the National Art Center. Fridays are until 20:00 and inside for 2700yens, in this too grandiose background, you can have a full French course in Bistrot Paul BOCUSE (by Hiramatsu Group)…

You're now within walking distance of Butagumi (a phenomenal tonkatsu restaurant) in Nishi-azabu. Check Bento for other Nishi-azabu recommendations. I liked Teyandei quite a bit, although I don't believe they have any English menus.
Ichiran is a popular ramen shop as well. Down towards Nogizaka station is a fun fish izakaya called Uoshin which pretty good.
Feel free to email me, I'm in that area quite a bit actually for shopping and my favorite bar.
