Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Manhattan

Trying to find right restaurant for 6 people for birthday - Artisanal? Jane? or Public?

Looking for Friday night restaurant for 6 people to celebrate husbands birthday. He loves Artisanal but I'm afraid it might be too loud. Any recommendations for good place not too overly pricey? He loves French, English, Italian and is originally from New Zealand. Never been to Jane or Public but I've seen good reviews. THANK YOU

    1. All I can say is I am a big fan of Public, I am also a big fan of Artisanal. Public shares no similarity to Artisanal, i.e. food, space, service, noise (but I'm sure you already knew that). I think your party size is about as big as I would go at Public because of the seating, very linear in the bigger main rooms. Depending on what day you are planning to go you could look into the Monday Room at Public for a glass of wine prior to dinner (nice space but not the same full menu as the restaurant).

I think prices are great for what you get at Public.

So you have some other choices you could also look into August or Klee.

          i'd go with artisinal

          • I have not had the chance to go to Jane yet. However, have been to Artisanal and Public and definitely preferred Public overall. Artisanal of course has amazing cheese selections but their other food I found a bit uninspiring. Public, on the other hand, reminded me of some of the excellent restaurants we ate at in Australia. As spiritchaser noted, it is a good value.
