High Tea in Bangkok?

Hello,

My husband and I would like to go to a nice high tea in Bangkok. I've read a couple of suggestions, I think - Mandarin Oriental, Peninsula Hotel.

Do people have ideas on if we were to choose one? We'd like a nice ambiance and food choices important too! I think this is going to be our first tea together.

Thank you for any thoughts.

High tea with a South Asian twist. Terrific mango and sticky rice, traditional scones and Thai inspired savories and sweets. Great setting with elegant service. Quiet. Good place to while away an afternoon.

It's been a few years, but if your concierge can arrange it, tea on the verandah at the Royal Bangkok Sports Club was very nice.

Without doubt, the Author's Lounge in the Mandarin Oriental is the place for high tea. Like much of the hotel's lobby and public rooms, it has somewhat of a 'circus' atmosphere in that loads of visitors walk through to check out the atmosphere and photo taking. Given all that, the lounge is very cozy with rattan furnitures and the service is excellent.
The Peninsula is more sedate but the lobby is not particularly distinctive (like any big city hotel) but if seated next to the windows, there is a nice view of the beautiful ground and out to the Chao Phraya river. If weather permits, one can request high tea outside in their lush garden.

Again I agree with PBSF. The Oriental's Author's lounge has the best clottted cream ever, plus it serves a wonderful rare Chinese tea "Monkey Pick". Actually Monkey Pick is not the best tea to go with scones. Better choose one of the more classic Indian teas and bypass the legendary Chinese tea whose leaves are so delicate that they were once picked by trained monkeys.

We had tea on New Year's Day at the Oriental-- sigh, wonderful. Deelicious, and beautiful setting. I had traditional and my husband had the Asian tea. Abundant. Next time, we'll split the Asian one and order traditional scones. Thank you for suggestion!!

How did your search for sit down "restos" go?

Well, not well but my motivation dwindled because we were so happy and endlessly curious about eating in malls, streets, and non- planned/formal meals. The only "sit down" we did was Blue Elephant, which I had been to before, and just wanted my husband to experience it too. Of course, my favorite app was out! The one where you fold ingrediants in a leaf of a kind.

We ate mostly at malls-- MBK, Siam Paragon (a lot), and Convent Rd stalls. Oh, and had Japanese at Centerworld's Sens? Which was good.

Next time, will maybe check out Celadon? I have a hard time in Bangkok b/c good food seems endless!!

You can often find miang kum streetside. This vendor also sells newspapers across from Central Chitlom:

25 baht! What does it run at the Elephant?

Sigh... and they told us they were out because they didn't have the leaves or the sauce that day. We thought that strange.

But we did have a new experience with the "Crispy Catfishd." It came and I started serving it--- looked and looked for the catfish and realized it was the shredded crispy thing all over the plate! Very interesting.

It is quite an interesting preparation!

In Bangkok, where else but the Author's Lounge at the Oriental!
