What's a good price for Lobster in Toronto?

It's $6.98/lb (live) at T&T this week... is that a reasonable price?

TIA... LK

The per pound price of lobster varies depending on the size of the lobsters so 3.99/lb might be for 1 lb lobsters while 1.5lb lobsters might be 4.99/lb. So make sure you are comparing apples to apples.

The New T&T at woodbine had a promo according to a friend for 3.99$/lb opening week. Dunno about size of the lobster though. The others T&T supermarket have a special till 9th for 5.99/lb.

Chinatown supermarkets around Dundas and Spadina have a high turnover of lobster at between $6 to $8 per pound depending on the day.

        thanks to you both.

I just came back from the (wonderful) new Longo's at Bathurst and Rutherford and they had live lobster for $7.99/lb. The lobsters looked very colourful and active in the tank so for the dollar more I think Longo's will get my lobster business this time.

You might check out the No Frills at Yonge & 16th as well. They have a large Asian clientele, and their lobsters always look fresh and active due to turnover.

But I'm surprised you called the Longo ones "colourful". Lobsters don't turn red until they're cooked. Before that, they're a dark, mottled green. What colour were the ones you saw?

I know they don't turn red until their cooked. They were definately not cooked. I guess when I said colourful, I was refering more to their activity than actual colour which was a dark greenish red orange. My bad.

For some unknown reason lobster always costs 1-2c less than x dollars. In terms of live lobster in the 1.5lb-ish live weight then that is near the top end of Asian supermarkets and near the bottom end of everyone else's.

So you will often see it at $4-99 and &5-99 in other Asian markets.

I've seen $4.99 at Foodie Mart on Warden as well as the Chinese supermarket at Sheppard and Brimley! Preivious low was $3.98!!! ( a few weeks back! ) Cheaper than Dungeness crab!
