ISO Best Blueberry Muffin

For my girlfriends birthday every year I like to take her to places that serve some of her favorite foods.

First on my list are blueberry muffins. I'll destination drive from my Woodland Hills home over an hour for the perfect muffin if it means making her birthday that much more special. Though keeping it under a 2 hour drive is preferred.

Where's the best blueberry muffin and how far will this journey take me?

I know I'm late in replying and that it might be too far but King's Hawaiian Bakery & Restaurant in Torrance makes some killer blueberry muffins. They have a nice streusel topping, a firm crust and a perfect center. They are on the smallish side, though.

This recommendation is going to be an anomaly-but the best blueberry muffins I've personally ever had are the ones at Souplantation....

The blueberry muffins at Souplantation were so much better about 10 years ago before they were miniature-ized. They are also sweeter now, to compensate for the reduction in blueberries used per batch. Still good, just not as good as before.

It's not a muffin, but the blueberry corn cake at Huckleberry is transcendent and worth a schlep from Woodland Hills.

Years ago in Palo Alto, all of us technoids would trek over to now-closed Il Fresco for breakfast because of their great blueberry muffins, which were very large and moist but light, with a deliciously crusty top. Do such muffins exist in Los Angeles?

as i posted above, and no i don't own stock there, K's Donut Emporium has dense, super moist moist blueberry muffins with a bordering on crunchy top crust... so good. and jumbo juicy blueberries.

K's is at Beverly Glen and Ventura in Sherman Oaks

I like them moist, Emme, but light -- not dense -- and not "fluffy," as you described the Porto's muffins. That crunchy top is very important, because it's the lingering, final memory of the muffin experience. Gold star for places where you can also get outstanding bacon, coffee, and juice. I guarantee you that if these kinds of muffins are available in Los Angeles, the OP and his girlfriend will live happily ever after! (Just trying to motivate you muffin experts to tell what you know.)

does she prefer dense/cakey or fluffy? streusely topping or none?

dense/cakey - K's Donut Emporium does dense, uber-moist muffins.

Porto's has the fluffier variety

Clementine has a sour cream blueberry muffin/coffee cake that was also well-liked by my blueberry muffin fiend of an ex.

And though this may sound like heresy, Ralphs Market actually does pretty damn good fluffy style muffins with a streusel topping.

Hope others chime in, as I'm sure they will!

The couple local blueberry muffins she's had and enjoys are from the local chain Mimi's and another close place called Nat's Early Bite. Those are of the fluffy variety, and I'm sure she'd enjoy the addition of a streusel top.
