Good Lemon Meringue Pie - Westside, Santa Monica, or ???

A dear friend wants lemon meringue pie for his birthday "cake". Since I am cooking dinner I'd like to buy the pie. Any suggestions for a good pie? Price is not an issue & I would settle for a nice lemon meringue tart.

I live in Santa Monica but would be willing to schlep.

  1. The best lemon meringue pie around is Sweet Lady Jane on Melrose. Believe me....I've tried them all and this one comes the closest to the one I was raised on. I believe they only sell tarts, not pies, but I'd recommend calling ahead and having it set aside. They're very popular and for a very good reason.
The crust is wonderful, the filling is just the right balance of tart and sweet, and the meringue is piled high.
You will not be disappointed. One bit of advice....don't let the naysayers, regarding the places 'attitude', deter you. I'll overlook any bit of occasional attitude to be able to purchase this delicious tart.

I've had the same experience as you. As much as I am reluctant to rec SLJ, her lemon desserts, especially that lemon meringue tart, is a level above what I've tried at other places. Perfect balance between sweet and tart, exceptional lemon flavor with nice bits of lemon rind, and very nice mouth feel as well. It's been a couple years now since my last visit, so I can't personally attest to the current status of the place or its service issues. I don't know if they make a large tart or pie - I remember the individual size. If this is the case, one/per will have to do, but I think they're $8-10 each, so it can add up quickly.

    2. My friend swears by the lemon meringue pie they serve at Gulfstream in the Century City Mall. It has a graham cracker crust which I love so it's on my list of desserts to try. I don't know if they would sell a whole pie but it's worth a call. I've seen a picture of it on Chowhound before as someone else recommended it as well. You should be able to find it by searching above if it sounds like a potential option.
