Montreal Grocer

Hi there.

I'll be in Montreal/Tremblant for a week starting monday, and I was wondering what some nice upscale grocers in Montreal are. Something like a Whole Foods maybe? We will be leaving Old Montreal for Tremblant on Tuesday, and would like to stop and stock up with good food for our condo in Tremblant. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    1. If it were me I'd go to the new branch of Adonis out at Place Vertu. High-quality, terrific variety of stuff - from a top notch fish counter where they can cook the fish for you, to a huge array of takeout goods from salads to shish taouk, to cheese, olive & nut counters, to house-baked goods.

Not sure it if qualifies as "upscale" though. We don't do the Whole Foods thing here.

      Adonis Market- Place vertu
      3100 boul. Thimens,
      Saint-Laurent, Quebec, H4R 0C9

You could also make a foray to the Atwater or Jean-Talon markets.

        1. The Adonis recco's a good one but you'll find a far broader choice of victuals -- raw milk cheeses, artisanal charcuterie, organic meats, regular and gourmet produce, Quebec specialties, prepared dishes, olive oils, spices, the city's best ice cream, exotic condiments, bakeries, loose tea, pastries, prepared dishes, etc. -- at the Jean Talon Market and environs. Little Italy (with the great Italian supermarket Milano, various coffee bars, Alarti-Casserta pastry shop, etc.) adjoins the market to the west and south; a smattering of decent Asian markets (vegetables, meats, fish, condiments, Chinese BBQ, buns, rolls, etc.) are located on St-Denis just south of Jean Talon, a couple of blocks east of the market; excellent Middle Eastern takeout (hummus, tabouleh, stuffed vine leaves, lahmajoun, etc.) can be had a few minutes' walk to the north (Zataar) and northeast (Chez Apo).

Yup, Jean Talon Mrkt is definitely the place to be. Kpzoo I agree, it seems the Adonis at Cote Vertu is superior to it's other locations, I work close by and had to jump in at lunch time to pick something up a few days ago, I passed by the fish counter and the fish looked very very fresh, moreso than the Sources location. They had a much better selection too. I don't think I'd call it "upscale" though, as they don't carry the freshest produce that's available. i.e meat counter is nothing spectacular in terms of quality and fruits and vegetables are hit or miss. More of a decent "ethnic market".

              • Milano on St. Lawrence in Little Italy is fantastic for all things Italian: great fresh sausages, fresh pasta, pickled veggies and so much more.

                  1. I would agree with all these posters, but I know how it goes sometimes. You might be out of the city and thinking "I'll pick up something along the way"
Just a word of warning, the Tremblant area is quite limited in grocery items. Granted the IGA and Marche Village do have a few interesting items geared to the upscale visitor, but generally, there ain't much choice.
St. Jovite has a tad more, but your your last big place would be in St. Agathe.
