Holey Cream, new HK bakery/sweet shop; open on Xmas

Brand new place I stumbled across, on 9th at 53rd. Wasn't sure what to expect, but the sign said Illy coffee, and so I wandered in, figuring it was a sign of good taste.
Turns out they have homemade donuts as well as various ice creams, including a peanut butter chocolate hard packed yogurt which is pretty darned good.
The coffee, being Illy, was of course up to snuff.
The owners could not be nicer-despite my protests, they gave me a free donut, since "they would have extra anyway" by the end of the day. Now, I am not a huge donut fan, but I figured I should give it a try. Very good with a nice crumb. Very fresh tasting.
And best of all-they're open tomorrow. Illy coffee and fresh baked goods on Xmas Day, can't beat that!

  1. any idea if they make the yogurt too? if not, i'll bet it's from Sedutto. their hard-packed chocolate peanut butter yogurt is *so* good.

      Nope; apparently it's from a recipe from the owner's family; hand-made just below the store. But, haven't tried Sedutto's yogurt yet so you make me curious to try!

        disclaimer: i haven't had it in years so i don't know if it's changed at all. but their hard-packed chocolate peanut butter yogurt used to have honest-to-goodness *chunks* of PB in it. i hope for your sake it still does ;)

    2. Ortho, thanks for the tip on Holey Cream. We stopped by today based upon your post. We LOVED it. We had the red velvet cupcake, the peanut butter crunch ice cream and a "guinea pig" sample of a new apple spice donut that the proprietor had just concocted.

      The place has only been open for 3 days, so I hope they do well. The donut was hot, fresh and delicious. The ice cream was awesome with huge chunks of peanut butter in it.

      Best of all was the red velvet cupcake. We used to think Two Little Red Hens was the benchmark for red velvet cupcakes, but this one was better. HUGE, soft, fresh, no graininess at all in the frosting, and full of flavor.

      As ortho stated, the owners are SUPER nice too. Hit this place up.

        1. I stopped by last night and had some awesome samples and then a great take-away ice cream. As noted in the other posts, the owner is incredibly friendly and proud of his product. I've been living in the neighborhood for a while and I'm thrilled to finally have a real neighborhood ice cream shop (ColdStone doesn't cut it!). I tried the donut sandwich, which was certainly a decadent treat.

          1. I dropped by there last night and had a completely different experience than all of you. I did a search and was so surprised to see this thread. I don't know if he was the owner, but the guy working there was as cold and obnoxious as could be. It is rare that I'm so turned off by store workers. I didn't have a donut but had a cupcake. Must have been the same cupcake batch as when Slob ate his because it was stale, stale, stale! One third of the outer ring of the cupcake was very hard. If they haven't sold their cupcakes in a few days, they really should throw it out instead of trying to sell it. This experience makes me never want to try them again. I would have rather gone to Magnolia's (and many of you know how I feel about them).
