Review: Cravings restaurant, Longwood/Orlando: 3 stars

  • 1

My husband and I, and our two toddlers, had lunch at the new Cravings in Longwood, corner of 434 and I-4, today.

They have high chairs and were friendly with the kids. The kids had grilled chicken and french fries. The grilled chicken was very smokey, a bit strong for small children, and pretty dry. The french fries, however, were excellent. Other kids menu offerings were chicken fingers, mac & cheese, and pasta w/red sauce. If I had known how dry the grilled chicken would be, we would have gone with chicken fingers.

The soups offered were lobster bisque or French onion with a gruyere crouton, both of which sounded great to me. I asked the waitress which was better, and she and another waiter both said the lobster bisque was the best thing on the menu. So DH and I split a $6 bowl of lobster bisque. It was a huge bowl, and it was decent, but I've had better lobster bisque at The Boheme and some other places. I wished I had gotten the French onion.

I ordered the apple cheddar salad, which came with apples, walnuts, tomatoes, white cheddar, cucumbers, a maple glaze, and apple-caraway dressing, over mixed spring greens. The combination of flavors was great, but there were only 4 thin little slices of apple on it. I estimated they could make probably 5 salads from 1 apple! Cheap. I also should have asked for romaine lettuce because mixed greens are always stalky, and I hate that. The salad was a little bigger than a side salad, but not meal-sized. It came in the exact same size bowl the soup came in. All of the salads are about $8-10, but that's without any meats (chicken, steak, shrimp). You have to add $4 for meats. So you're looking at at least $12 to get any kind of substantive meal salad. Add a bowl of soup and you're looking at $18 for soup and a mid-size salad, before any drink, tax, or tip. And I left hungry.

DH had the buffalo chicken wrap. The chicken on it was the same dry grilled chicken that came on the kids' meal. He said I make better wrap sandwiches at home, but the apple slaw side was good. Other side dishes were (presumably homemade) gorgonzola kettle chips and sweet potato salad, although they didn't have sweet potato salad today.

Other menu offerings include some flatbreads, only one of which has meat on it. Vegetarians might like the place. Also a burger and some paninis.

Atmosphere is nice, sort of Tommy Bahama-ish, but the food is overpriced, especially for the current market. We have no plans to go back.

  1. Okay, the link shown for this restaurant is not the Cravings in Longwood, some other Cravings in Vero Beach. I have no idea if they are the same.
