What are you cooking for Christmas Eve dinner? I am looking for menu ideas -- for a group of 5, that includes one young child. Something besides turkey or ham? Thanks!

Tamales...yummm...you can buy if making is too time intensive.

I always grew up on grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup on Christmas Eve - it was comfort food, simple prep in preparation for the next day. So last year we did fancy grilled cheese (nice bread and cheese - think panini), and a nice roasted tomato soup. Served with salad and fruit and hot chocolate. Perfect.

This year we are going with some friends to celebrate the scandinavian way - salt roasted lamb or beef, potatoes, whipped turnips (actually parsnips because some don't like turnips), green beans, etc. Dessert is rice pudding.

We've done steaks, which are nice for a group of 5.

And some years we just go out for Indian food.

We always eat Chinese on Christmas Eve.

Lasagna, garlic bread, salad. Or a big pot of soup and bread. Growing up, we'd have shrimp scampi and a crab salad.

Me, I've mooched an invitation for the 4 of us to go to a neighbor's house. She is a wonderful cook.
