OLIVE OIL TASTING?

One of my teen lads, aka BreadBoy, wants to go olive oil tasting today. I have seen a table in the past at Surfas with lots of open bottles to sample with little bread cubes but didn't notice that set up when I was there the day before yesterday.
His purpose is that he wants me to try and duplicate the made to order Bread Sticks that he absolutely loves that are served at Vito's. I have looked for tins there but to no avail. It definately is not a premium/expensive brand! BreadBoy appreciates your collective advice!

  1. The easiest solution is to just ask Vito's what Olive Oil they use.

You may never discover it in 10 Olive Oil tastings.

    1. JBC has the right idea. Just call up Vito's and ask.

As for olive oil tastings, there are usually three or four oils at any given time available at Michael Chiarello's NapaStyle store in South Coast Plaza. I am not, I have to say, a fan of some of them.

Also, if you'd like to keep it to local olives, hit up the farmers' markets. There's one vendor -- and I'm damned if I can remember the name -- at the Long Beach Southeast Market on Sunday mornings (Marina just south of 2nd, past the craft fair) that has six or seven olive oils on tap, including a superior California arbequina.

      1. O & Co in the Grove, Century City and Fashion Island is a boutique specializing in olive products. They usually have 5-10 different olive oils, as well as vinegars and sometimes mustards to taste.

But I also agree with JBC, the probability of finding the exact oil used at Vito's with a sample size of 10 is quite low... hopefully you'll get close.

        1. there is an olive oil shop complete with tastings (sometimes they even pair with cheese and wine) on 2nd street in Long beaches belmont shores area!

It's called We Olive. They have countless olive oils out on the counter to taste, and all kinds of other types of items to sample as well (tapenades, mustards, dressings, vinegars, etc.). They are very informative and friendly. Might be too late, but you can also put together some great x-mas gift baskets with all their stuff.

This is where we went last weekend. The S. African gentleman in the shop was very helpful. My lad tasted many and picked the Robbins Family Farm Ascolano. Won Yolo County Fair 2009 Gold Award, California Mid-State Fair Best in Class. It does taste great but at $22.50/375ml bottle it's much more costly than what is served at Vito's! Been using it sparingly with home-baked breadsticks.
