Likely to be open in Portsmouth Christmas Eve/Day?

Turns out I'll be in Portsmouth NH on Christmas Eve and Christmas proper and am wondering if anyone has any experience with any downtown restaurants likely to be open on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day. Will be at a hotel with a dog who can't be left alone, so am looking for places that do decent take out. Thanks!

  1. Hmm...I can't give you much info on what will be open, but I can give you some recommendations on decent takeout. Are you going to be downtown?

If you like Indian food, Shalimar is very good. It's been a while since I got takeout from there, but I'm fairly certain they still offer it.

The Rosa has decent Italian food...not great, mind you, but decent and they definitely do takeout.

I think a lot of the bars/pubs do takeout. Poco's has decent mexican-ish food. Again, not going to blow your mind, but fine.

Not sure what exactly you're looking for, but The Rusty Hammer has the best burgers in town, IMHO. (Looks like they're closed on Christmas day, though.

I generally don't point people to The Friendly Toast...I think the food is just mediocre and overpriced, but they do have some interesting breakfasts and sandwiches, and they do takeout. Again, no idea if they'll be open or not.

I'll see if I can come up with any other takeout places to check. Two of my go-to takeout places just closed, unfortunately, so my mental rolodex is depleted!
