Sarasota Barbecue

mactoo Dec 18, 2009 07:33 AM

Can anyone refer me to some BBQ joints in the Sarasota area? My only criteria is great BBQ. I don't care about price, service or decor.

Has anyone been into Oak Open Pit BBQ?

I hit Alday's today and it was a bit inconsistent. I had a pork sandwich and a rib dinner. The pork sandwich was very good. The meat was cut in nice chunks and it was juicy with a good amount of smoke. I also liked the bun that it came on. The hot sauce was vinegar based and I have to say that I am getting tired of those flavors. All the vinegar based hot sauces taste roughly the same; there is very little nuance to the flavors. That gripe aside, it was a very good sandwich. The rib dinner was less impressive. The ribs were overcooked. That strikes me as a bit odd for getting there at 1:30. The meat was dry and had no chew to it. The dinner came with three ribs and two large sides. I would prefer smaller sides and additional ribs, but I am sure the decision to serve it this way is driven by economics. It's a fine bbq stand but I wouldn't drive from Tampa to eat there. I would be just as happy, probably happier really, to eat at Jazzy's or Jaymer's. On the other hand, seeing as I go to Sarasota quite a bit, I can easily imagine going back under the right circumstances.

Nancy's BBQ is opening by the end of the year in the former Pinini Press restaurant. Will keep you informed...

Nancy is opening her own place? That's awesome.

I like Roadside BBQ on Bahia Vista off the Trail. There's also T&L on 14th Street W just outside of downtown Bradenton. The rib tips melt in your mouth.

Nancy's BBQ has also been doing BBQ at Mr. Beery's Craft Beer Bar in Gulfgate on Sunday afternoons. It's pretty awesome, her pulled pork, some great brews, and football on the big screen!

T&L is on 14th st. aka Tamiami Trail aka US 41 in bradenton. It is on the west side of the road, next to a barber shop about 1 mile south of manatee ave.

Hello: I will be back in Sarasota January 11th and I'm just looking for an update. Is Nancy's BBQ up and running? Also where is the best roadside BBQ these days? Or if there is another joint that's great please let me know.

I have enjoyed the Gold Rush Barbeque a few miles south in Venice on Business 41.

OK....It's a mobile BBQ stand....I think it's called Alday's BBQ......I can't remember the exact address as I don't live in the area....but it's 2 blocks south of Big Olav's Creamery (that much I do know).....So look that up....and you'll find it.....It sits in a gas station / convenience store lot on a corner.....It's in the Amish section of Sarasota......I'm a BBQ purist.....and everything I've purchased there is EXCELLENT....Smoked beautifully.....generous portions......and very nice folks running it.......We've stopped by there 4 or 5 times when visiting friends in the area.....and within the last year......And we will stop there everytime......BBQ can be touch and go.....and always best to hit these places in "prime time" for freshly cooked meats......That said....go out of your way to go to this place to get some BBQ to go.......

When I lived in Sarasota a few years ago, my favorite was always Hickory Hollow in Ellenton.
