Best Bar with fun Austin vibe to watch the Longhorns/Spartans game?

We will be in town for the holidays, and I want to send my father and husband (big basketball fans) somewhere fun to have beers/drinks, maybe order food and sit in a fun Austin scene...Dad has never been to Austin before...Shoal Creek probably too cold and no TVs outside? Dog and Duck? Want something mroe unique to Austin, if possible. Thank you!

Also: Still looking for some holiday recommendations for drinks and dining. Lalas is definitely on the list...need somewhere for Christmas Eve as most spots are closed!

finally, is Snow's really worth the drive for the brisket? Otherwise, we are pretty happy at Smittys.

Thank you! Happy holidays to all!

  1. My default sports bar for local flavor is the Tavern-- a million TVs and pretty good burgers while retaining something of an Austin feel. Another option: Scholz Garten. I can't comment on the food, but the crowd is usually fun.

    1. I don't have any suggestions for sports watching, but I can help you out on the other stuff.

The lobby lounge at the Fours Seasons is a great place to celebrate Christmas Eve. I haven't been in a few years, but my family has gotten together there many times over the years to celebrate on xmas eve and always had a blast. Can't beat the drinks and there's the bar menu will provide you with many nibbling options. Can't beat the people watching either.

Believe the hype and make the drive to Snow's (which is only a few minutes longer than the drive to Lockhart anyway). I say this with great confidence. My husband and I went to all the major bbq joints in central TX over the summer (Louis Mueller's, Smitty's, Kreuz, Black's, Luling City Market, Gonzales Food Market, Meyer's and Southside Market) and sampled brisket at all of them. The brisket at Snow's is the best I've ever eaten in my life. We went 3 times over a couple of months and it was equally outstanding each and every time. My husband wept a little when he ate his first bite, it was so transcendent. The bark is deep and perfect, the smoke ring wide, the texture meltingly tender and flavor deeper smokier than any other brisket I've ever had. Sure, Smitty's brisket is great, but Snow's is even better. Get some pork steak while you're there too.
