Tips for Dining, Eating and Food Shopping in Pennsylvania (exc. Philadelphia, inc Pittsburgh)

Philly Restaurant week

Likely going two nights - have already made reservations at Amada for the one evening.

Looking for ideas/suggestions for the second evening. Thoughts?

  1. FWIW I went to Distrito (same owner/exec chef as Amada) for UC Dining Days (the University City equivalent of Restaurant Week) and was really disappointed. The menu was limited and they seemed to be cutting corners. The food just wasn't very good and in reality it didn't save much money compared to a regular menu but options were more limited. I have had good meals there since, so It kind of turned me off to Restaurant Week at any Garces place.

I did RW at Zahav maybe a year ago and it was excellent. But again it doesn't save much money compared to their normal $36 prix fixe, though I don't think that includes dessert. I've also had good RW meals at Lolita and Xochitl. With so many high end places doing $35 prix fixes during the week (Lacroix, La Bec Fin) I think I will avoid RW since the restaurants tend to be harried and crowded, the menus are limited, and I don't trust the kitchens.

Every meal I've had at Modo Mio, which has an every day "Turista" menu for $33 (4 courses, pick from the full menu) is as good or better than any RW meal I've had.

Just my two cents. I guess I am kind of cyncial.

The normal $36 prix fixe at Zahav does include dessert.

RW gets lambasted here basically every time it happens, with good reason in my opinion. Most places either don't serve their full menu, don't serve their full portion size, or are just not much of a deal at $35pp anyway.
