Dungeness Crab Pricing

golfer1 Dec 17, 2009 03:45 PM

I have read on a few boards/blogs that in the US the Dungeness Crab harvest was huge, with large crabs, lots of them and low prices. They were talking in the $4.00 per pound pricing. I have not seen any of that here in Edmonton. Curious if anyone is seeing the lower pricing in Western Canada anywhere?

Dungeness crab is harvested all year long here so isn't subject to large seasonal fluctuations in pricing like further south. I'll have a look next time I'm at T&T though.

A couple of weeks ago I bought live crab at Superstore for $3.99/lb. on sale. That's the lowest price I've ever seen. These weren't the "large" size, but I asked for "larger ones" from the small tank and got a couple of 1.5 -2 pounders and no missing limbs. But you have to ask. I love the fact that they will kill and clean them for you for no extra charge. We ate like kings that night!

The lowest I've seen was at T&T in the Vancouver area for $4.99, but these crabs were often culled / missing limbs and were the smaller of the two sizes available.
