Looking for ideas on something different. Maybe a little funky compared to their endless diet of suburban applebees etc.

Trying to stay in neighborhood (Lafayette/Astor). Cuisine is open.

Casual. Was thinking something like Stand, but perhaps a few blocks closer.

ACME is fun southern grub with a honkeytonkish decor. Chinatown Brasserie offers upscale Chinese but not too odd or intimidating for 14 yr old suburban tastes.

Gyu Kaku could be fun for them.

I did think of that and its on the list. I'm leaning towards Otto - maybe a couple of blocks extra, but I want to see them try the olive oil gelato!

otto is one of my favs...jkust make sure you make reservations and BE PREPARED to still wait to be seated. that's the one hting I cannot stand about that place. reservations mean nothing. It just means at some point you will sit...if you dont make reservations, forget it.
Gyu Kaku could be fun for them too.
