Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Manhattan

Which of these three?

Trying to decide between Peter Luger's, Babbo or Le Bernardin for a Saturday night meal in Feb. I know they are three varied choices but I am having trouble deciding between them. Any advice is appreciated and any further suggestions are welcomed.

    1. All three are the top in their category. Which do you want? Steak, Seafood or Italian. Downtown, uptown or Brooklyn?

I guess that is part of the problem, I want all three. Location is not a concern.

Is it for a group, just you, romantic dinner for two? I personally would pick Babbo, but I am a huge Italian fan.

Since you can't have all 3 then it's Le Bernardin without question. In my opinion a great steak house is a great steak house and not alot more (that is not a negative comment), Babbo is Italian elevated to grand levels but when it comes down to it it's, IMO, high level Italian. LB is sublime, fish brought to an entirely different world because that's what they do. Recent diiner there was easily one of the top 10 meals I've ever had. I also give Chef Ripert major props for his conscience use of sustainable species

I also say Le Bernardin hands down. The BEST meal every time I go there.

                  • It's like you are aksing, "should I eat an apple, or should I eat an orange?" You're talking about three distinctly different restaurants in every way.

We could make better suggestions if we knew: 1) what is the occasion?; and 2) how many diners will be involved?

                      1. re: ChefJune

It is a dinner for my wife and I and a friend and his wife. No special occasion per se, just us visiting our friends in NYC. I was leaning towards Le Bernardin due to my wife's love of seafood (she is from Seattle) and the fact that sublime seafood is hard to come by in Atlanta for the most part.

What about Marea? You can combine seafood and Italian. I am from close to ATL and there is nothing close to LB, Babbo or Marea, so anything you pick will be a treat!

                          2. Babbo because you can order order a pretty darn good ribeye as well as pasta so you are fulfilling 2 out of three of your request.

Another vote for Le Bernardin, just had lunch there, it was sublime. The food, service and ambiance are all amazing.

                                • Le Bernardin, easily. It's the priciest and most formal, but the food is on a completely different level of refinement and skill IMO.
