Rendered Duck Fat

So my office is having a gift swap-- and I got the aspiring chef who is in night and weekend culinary school. Budget is 20 dollars. Would love to get him something random and I know he love love lovesss rendered duck fat. Where can I get some great giftable duck fat in NYC? Also other suggestions are welcome!

  1. Run, don't walk, to your nearest Gourmet Garage, or Fairways, where you can get wonderful duck fat from D'Artagnan. Well within your budget. Get some for yourself, you'll never again roast potatoes (and many other things) without it!

I think Fairway's is particularly well priced, if I recall correctly.

I bought him two tubs of the d'artagnan duck fat. He was THRILLED! Thanks all for the help! It was definitely the best gift at the gift swap...

Oh good - glad it worked out. Duck fat is the gift that keeps on giving. I have some in my fridge that is at least three years old.

    2. Just about every "gourmet"market sells this...look for Rougie brand in a jar at Fairway, Citarella, etc etc.

More economical is the 2-pound bucket sold by Hudson Valley Fois Gras:

Most economical: Bring your own container to Chinatown and ask one of the duck places to fill it up for you.....I've not done this, however.
