tamales in Oxnard/Ventura for holidays?

  • 3

I will be staying on the beach in Oxnard for the holidays. I'm leaving tomorrow, so I don't want to get tamales here in LA for Christmas. I know there's a large Latino population up that way, so surely there's a place where I can pick up a few dozen tamales, right? Doesn't have to be a restaurant--anyplace will do. Please advise. Is this too far from LA? Should I put this on the other California board?

  1. Here's a couple of options for you:
On the way you can exit at Lewis in Camarillo and turn R off the hwy. Turn R again and go under the fwy bridge (the metrolink/train station is on your L) just under at the corner of the street is a Mexican meat market. (Lewis and Ventura) Forgot the name but, the owners make their own tamales. (I work w/the owners sister). Another option is to go to the Vallarta Market in Oxnard off Rose Ave. I think.

Vallarta-Oxnard is a good distance from Rose. It's near the five-points intersection where Oxnard, Saviers, Wooley, and PCH split apart. That neighborhood is filled with Mexican restaurants, however, and I've got to believe that some of them have better tamales than a supermarket. Pick one for lunch, and ask your waiter who has the best tamales. Another likely nearby area is Port Hueneme, where I once chanced upon a fantastic little Mexican place in one of those run-down strip malls on the north side of Hueneme Rd. My advice, again, would be to stop somewhere for tacos and make inquiries. "My friend Julio told me about a place around here with great Christmas tamales, but I can't remember the name ..."

P.S. While you're in Oxnard, you might want to visit the lavishly lighted old mansions on Christmas Tree Lane. It's fun and a lovely show:

    2. Sabor has amazing tamales as well as Vallarta Market. There are many local restaurants in Downtown Oxnard that have great tamales. You'll just have to get out there and try them all! Many sell out over the holidays. Sabor also has great fish tacos.
