Looking For A Less Expensive Smoke House (Burbank) and Cafe Bizou (Sherman Oaks)

There will be three of us. It's a very special occasion. I need a restaurant where the ambience is comfortable and not intimidating, the American "meat and potatoes" menu delicious, and the service friendly. We will most likely have one drink before dinner, possibly a bottle of wine with, and choice of scrumptous desserts after . I would like to keep the cost between $100.00 and $125.00 including tax, gratuity, and valet parking. The location can be anywhere within 25 miles of the San Fernando Valley. C'est possible? All suggestions deeply appreciated.

  1. What happened?
Last week you were willing to spend $150.

Smoke House is having a Monday Night prime rib special for $12.95 and 50% off any bottle of wine.

Early bird specials are 25% off the menu price.
    Monday-Saturday 4pm-6pm
    Sunday 3pm-5pm

Hi, Monku: These are two different occasions; one for four, the otker for three. Soke Hous is perfect except that I may nor be able to do a Monday. If I could, I'd have no problem. And it won't be an early bird.

    2. I think you will have to compromise somewhere. Green Street Restaurant in Pasadena generally fills the bill except that the atmosphere is pretty pedestrian. Depending on what you order and with its low corkage ($2?), Bizou is a pretty good deal. I haven't been to the Smoke House in years but I still remember their cheese bread.

      1. Have you tried Spark Woodfire Grill in Studio City? Nice steaks and chops, woodfired pizzas, and not terribly expensive.

Great place. I've been there several times and it would be perfect, but the young lady in the party of three is my granddaughter and she has been there many times also. She is also one of the 2 ladies in my party of 4 at the Cafe Bizou. Thanks, kellybean. Another Spark Woodfire Grille is exactly what I'm hoping to find.

        2. Beckham Grill in Pasadena has 50% off menu items on Monday & Tuesday and fits your other requirements. http://www.beckhamgrill.com/

That menu looks very similar to the one at Gulliver's ( www.gulliversrestaurant.com ) in Irvine. Have you been to both? Can you compare them? Thanks.

            1. re: Harry Nile

The operations are very similar although my memory is that the bar scene at Beckham is not the same.

              1. re: Harry Nile

Hi, Harry. Gulliver's ambience and menu look absolutelt perfect, albeit a bit high for my budget. I'll do some calculations to see if there's anyway I can aftford it.

                  gulliver's is in irvine.
no point in doing any calculationsfor gulliver's if you don't plan to go to irvine.
                  beckham grill is in pasadena
orythedog included the link to beckham grill. probably you should do your calculations based on beckham. . .

                  1. re: westsidegal

Now that you mention it, I think there's a Gulliver's in the Marina (at least there used to be).

                    1. re: mc michael

Closed for probably 10 years. Turned into (bleech) Jerry's Deli.

                        decades ago.
jerry's deli in the marina is in the space they used to occupy.

                      2. re: westsidegal

I've already printed the menu and prices. But I haven't yet had the time to calculate my possible cost. Candidly, The Smoke House makes me intellectually drool, because what I remember it so well from years ago as well as from what people are telling me now. Hell, I might throw my hands up and go to Dr. Hogly Wogly Tyler texas BBQ and have their ribs. (Just kidding).

                  2. re: orythedog

Hi, orythedog. I'm totally unfamiliar with the Beckham Grille in Pasadena. I'll cyeck it out, and thank your the suggestion.

                  3. I described Damon's and provided a link in your other thread. I think it would fulfill your requirements or at least come very close.

Thank you, Sam D. I'll check it out.

                    2. While at least in close proximity, the new Raphael in Studio City next door to the Midori AYCE sushi restaurant, meaning at 11616 Ventura, is probably a tad higher than you want, yet entrees are in the 20s, except the filet or lamb chops. No mixed drinks, strictly beer & wine but a very tempting wine list. Realllllly nice looking too.
Ca del Sole(full liquor) on Cahuenga/Lankershim might work as might Bistro Provence in Burbank on Pass Avenue just north of the 134 Fwy.(but b&w only).

Hi, Carter. Ca del Sole we've done, and you're right. It would have been one of my choices, but I'd like this dinner to be at a restaurant that neither of them know. But thanks for your suggestion.
