Kauai Foodie?

rdnnyc Dec 14, 2009 12:10 PM

Would anyone have any recommendations for a Kauai based foodie gift? I am thinking perhaps of a gift certificate to Merriman's which I understand is new. This is for my brother and his girlfriend who live near Kapa'a. Gifts in the past have included gift certificates to The Wine Garden in Lihue and Red Salt right after it opened. Would love some other suggestions!

    Merriman's would be good..
    The Beach House in Poipu.
St. Regis hotel just opened up in late September in Princeville
    Costco in Lihue..
    Dukes for drinks and app's..
Keoki's Paradise in Poipu was good and popular with tourists and locals..one of the best chicken stir frys.
    We loved Red Salt!
Just stayed a week at the Grand Hyatt and Dondero's has a 5 course meal for $60 pp that was delicious..great wine list too.

Is this for Christmas? I would agree with either Merriman's or St. Regis (to be used at either Makana Terrace or the Kauai Grill). If not, wait a bit for the new Jean Marie Josselin tapas restaurant that should be opening within the next 3 months. If they are into food, they have probably already experienced Beach House, PGs, Hukilau, etc and I know that I would rather try something new than the same old.

Agreed--we've gone on each of our three Kauai trips over the past 5.5 years and are big fans. My parents went in the early 1970s and had an extremely memorable and delightful experience, and we're very happy that it's held up over time!

Yes - aiming for an xmas gift. Thanks for the recs. They have been to all the standards so I'm happy to hear about new places. Also glad to hear that the St. Regis might be worth a visit for them. We were there before it changed hands and weren't too into it. The Tapas place sounds good for a birthday gift!

I think you are thinking of Bar Acuda in Hanalei. In addition, a brand new wine/tapas bar has opened in Hanalei, located right next to Tahiti Nui, We just tried it out and it was excellent.

Can you tell me the name of the new tapas place that is not Bar Acuda? I would appreciate it..

The new tapa place will be called Josselin Tapas Bar and Grill. I was originally told when touring the shopping center that the restaurant was to be opened by early spring (march or April) but the website now says spring or summer 2010!!! sorry it will be a lot longer!!!!!

FYI - My brother and his girlfriend reported an excellent time at Merriman's. The favorite of the night was a butterfish special ordered by the girlfriend. Thanks for all the help everyone!
