Is there a rule on these boards that we can't post suggesting another more appropriate board?

I wasn't clear, sorry. I meant to say move to an *entirely different* board, not on Chowhound.

When I see something that doesn't appear to belong on CH then I report it as off topic and once the mods review it (and if they find it to be off topic for the entire site) they remove the post.

Whether we allow an outside link or not depends on the context of the thread here and what information is available on the outside link, as well as any relationship the person posting the link has with the linked site. Links to other sites aren't banned, but we do look at them with a critical eye.

If someone's question is something we'd consider on topic here, just suggesting they ask on a different site instead is generally going to be removed. If it's not on topic here, we'll most likely remove the whole thread anyway.

Thanks for your prompt reply. In the interest of helping the poster, I felt it might be more helpful to suggest a more appropriate site, rather than simply removing the post and leaving someone hanging...wondering. Glad to know linking to other sites isn't banned.
