Report from Kinderhook - Carolina House

My partner and I have enjoyed many meals at Carolina House, but tonight's was just so exceptional I wanted to alert any hounds in Columbia County that this is not to be missed. Ordering from the daily specials is always smart. We had the following:

Shrimp wrapped in wonton and deep-fried, served with a light orange dipping sauce and field greens (from the regular menu). The shrimp were succulent and the wontons perfectly fried. The sauce was delicious and did not overpower the shrimp.

Nachos with pulled pork. Great nachos with guacamole and salsa, with the most delicious pulled pork.

Peppercorn-encrusted sirloin steak. Perfectly medium-rare steak, very flavorful, with potato gratin and broccoli.

Parmesan-crusted halibut with lobster risotto and saffron beurre blanc. WOW! This was incredible. The fish was extremely fresh, like what I would get from Citarella in Manhattan, the risotto was done perfectly, there was a TON of lobster, perfectly cooked, and the sauteed spinach and asparagus were also cooked perfectly. It was a lot of food but I ate every bit of it.

The atmosphere is rustic, elegant, comfortable and cozy, and the service is always attentive and caring. Though we have very good restaurants in Hudson, I feel that Carolina House is superior, worth a detour for great food and better value. With a bottle of decent California Zinfndel the bill was about $90 before tip.

    1. One of my favorite restaurants of all times, glad to hear they're still as good as ever. Wish I could get up there more often.....thanks for the reminder.

        1. rrems, thanks for the report. Has the wine list improved?

We haven't been since summer of 2008 and maybe it's time for us to return. Another thread on the Carolina House:

The wine list is a bit better, still not great. The bottle we had was $23 and not bad for the price.
