Come on ... the restaurant linking problems are getting tiresome

There is a new pop up box that says something about restaurants will be automatically linked and and you can removed them if you want to.

The box is too big so if there is a close option I couldn't see it. I was in the middle of a long new post that I didn't first write in word so I didn't want to touch this box. Tough luck to me. Something about the box wiped out my post and took me to the SF board. Buh bye post.

Also, if clicking on manage links, the restaurant name box appears and disappears so a link can't be added.

And really ... what is the point of linking anyway. There are so many useless links right now and when looking at the restaurant record what discussions are there are pointless.

I just can not keep up with this stuff and I was meticulous about it before. Yes, it is nice that every dumb word is no longer auto-linked but on the other hand, currently the hit list for auto-linking is 50 percent.

Even restuarants with unique names like Zuni don't get linked because the Restaurant record has the name as Zuni Cafe ... which NO ONE who posts calls it ... it is Zuni. There are lots of restaurants like there.

It is too much work to figure is it linked or isn't it. It is a drag to remove links that get auto-generated and shouldn't be there.

I despise ... despise ... sites that tag stuff and then the link leads you to nowhere.

And while we are at it, it is going on over two months now that restaurants 50 miles outside SF are unable to be linked period. No update from Chow on that despite repeated requests.

Performance issues aside ... that was seven minutes just to get here ...

Here is what is happening with linking.

After clicking on manage your links, a box pops up that reads

"Chowhound is now automatically detecting and linking restaurant names in your post. In this panel, you can manage those links: either to remove them or to add ones that were not detected. You can also use the refresh button to refresh the list at any time."

Of course a place with a unique name like Teance didn't get picked up.

The box unfortunately has the close 'x' hidden under the ad or scrolls off the page so there is no way to close it I assume there is an 'x; in the upper right corner of the box ... but who knows. Most applications would do that.

The spinning icon doesn't spin. The box where the name could be entered briefly appears and then disappears so there is no way to enter the name even if one wanted to.

So the only thing to do is to refresh which takes another few minutes.

If a post is checked as a review, that is the only way to link the report to the restaurant record.

To paraphrase SNL ... "Really, Chow ... Really?"
