Suggestions for a sub-$20 bottle of French wine (easy to find)?

I need to find a good bottle of French wine (any variety works...just the best quality I can get) to give as a gift. My only stipulation is that it be around $20 (or less), and be easy to find (most likely in grocery chains, albertsons/safeway/trader joes, etc.). While I enjoy wine, I assume I'm pretty much a novice relative to those here, so I'm hoping someone can provide a good rec. So, what's the best I can get? TIA

  1. Go for a Loire Gamay, Beaujolais, Rhone or Languedoc. Villages designation are better. Perrin or Jadot are good.

    1. Many good 2005, 2006, 2007 Cotes-du-Rhone wines available right now.

      1. Depends where you're shopping. I'd look for a wine store that carries imports by Kermit Lynch, Louis/Dressner or Neal Rosenthal and see what they've got.
For that price, you're probably looking at Cru Beaujolais, the Loire, the Rhone, maybe the Alsace.

        1. BevMo is selling a Perfection Gigondas Coudoulier '07 and a Grandes Serres Gigondas '06 in the $15-$20 range. Either would be suitable.
