5 Star Thattukada (Keralan in a Candy Store)

Jim Leff Dec 10, 2009 04:21 PM

If you're looking for 5 star Thattukada 259-09 Hillside Ave, Bellerose, Queens, 718-343-4867, the wonderful Keralan restaurant hidden in the back of a candy store, please note that they've just moved to a real restaurant a couple miles away in New Hyde Park: 5 Star Indian Cuisine 247 Jericho Tpk, New Hyde Park (516) 502-2777

I finally had a meal there, and I'm not sure it's the same people. Food was fine, not great.

I'd really like to find the great young woman chef who used to work in back of the candy store....

Stuart, thanks for the link. That's exactly the food I've been looking for. 5-Star will be one of the first places I head to when I'm back in NY.

It's at the top of my list. Keralan is probably my favorite Indian regional cuisine, and my favorite part of India, and I found Kerala Kitchen so disappointing. If it's half as good as Thattukada in London, we're doing fine.

I've added to Stuart's report. I'm mentioning it here since it's on the NYS board, not outer boroughs.

wasnt that in the old Kerala Kitchen space - like a candy shop/soda fountain set up with a kitchen in the back?

is the food a lot better than Kerala Kitchen?

Kerala Kitchen is the most inconsistent restaurant I currently know, so I don't know how to answer that.

When those guys moved out of the candy store, the 5 Star guys moved in. They, too, are inconsistent, but generally quite good. They excel in special orders like crab curry. The candy store is now deserted (the cranky proprietor seems happy about that), and I have not yet tried the 5 star guys' new place.

Well that closes the loop in my head. I was underwhelmed by the taste of KK's food - hopefully will have a chance to try the new place someday. btw for southern non-veg cuisine, Southern Spice is really very good.

But, as you know, there's a diff between that and Keralan. Just noting for those who might not be aware.
