Gramercy-Gotham on a budget

I'd like to try the prix fixe dinner at Gramercy next Tues-Thurs. Can you get into the Tavern Room for it without a reservation? Any recommendations/comments on the quality/choices?
Failing that, how do Gotham and Gramercy compare for lunch?
Or what other good restaurants with specials are recommended in that area?

    1. I think the Tavern side of Gramercy is walk-ins only.

        1. Gramercy Tavern can be difficult to get into the tavern room without a reservation, especially at this time of year. They used to and still may have a $14 lunch special, soup and sandwich.

Also, Eleven Madison has a $28 two-course prix fixe lunch, which is really nice.

The Tavern Room does not take reservations.

The lunch special still exists -- it's pre-set i.e. no choices. And I believe the price is still $14...nice option for a solo lunch at the bar.

                2. The tavern is walk-in only and it's a wonderful meal. I would recommend going on Tues or maybe Weds as Thurs tends to be busier. Also, try to go as early as you can (i.e. before 8) to avoid a long wait time.

Besides that, the wine bar at I Trulli is nearby and good for pasta. Also, Blue Smoke for BBQ.
