has anyone seen this recently in san diego/ la jolla area?
From my perspective here in Baja, I would advise you to search for it in your local Mexican markets.
Ask for "queso panela". It is typically cured in a round-bottomed bamboo basket, so the outside edge of the cheese round has crosshatching.
Henry's and Vons sell it also.
In my experience, only certain Vons will have it, and most of them don't always have it. I've not seen it at the UTC (Regents Road) Vons in some time, but I may very well not be looking in the right aisle/cooler. :)
