Sea Urchin - Live

Market World at the corner of Golden Springs and Brea Canyon Rd. in Diamond Bar had live Sea Urchin yesterday. I've never seen sea urchin before in a market. But, for those of you who want fresh uni, you might want to check it out or call them to see if they still have it.

  1. Nice to know there's another source on the Eastern edge of LA County. For those closer to the South Bay, Quality Seafood in Redondo also has live uni.

Live Uni is available all over Downtown LA (seafood wholesalers) but the problem is? Most live Uni may have good, bad or average row unlike the already high-grade "sorted" trays which are the best selected eggs from several Uni. I'll stick with the "fresh" trays, it's safer too. Nothing more scary than a Mad UNI.

        Mad uni?

Wow, someone dug up this old thread. I've uploaded a video to YouTube, so you can see the still-wiggly uni as served at Quality Seafood.

          gnarly!

      3. What about restaurants that serve live uni? (I'm not interested in cracking it myself)
I had amazing live uni in san diego - right after the chef opened it, it was served. The texture of the uni's hole-things are also about the same size as the tastebuds on your tongue, so it's a great feeling when just killed to have the uni try and grab onto your taste buds)
I'd like to have this again and not be forced to drive to san diego for the experience

I've had live uni at Sushi Iki and Niko Sushi, both in Tarzana. But they don't always have it, you have to call first to make sure.

        2. I have had it at Quality Seafood on the Redondo Pier, as Professor Salt has mentioned. But even the very experienced servers there were unable to offer it without any shells, and the shell bits are very gritty, indeed! The taste of uni this fresh is unlike anything I have ever had, but I agree with Russkar that it is probably safer to consume it from those little wooden boxes (sometimes styrofoam painted like wood!) than to chance consuming a "bad" urchin.

maybe "safer", but nowhere near the flavor!

mr mouther - You are quite right. I have never been able to duplicate or even come close to the flavor of the live ones.
