Zephs' in Peekskill -deserves its own thread for sure!!

Just returned from my birthday dinner at Zephs'-- we haven't been in two years, and I could kick myself for waiting so long to return. This place really is special. The food is perfectly attuned to the seasons in terms of ingredients and preparations.

For an appetizer, I had a feta and roasted eggplant phyllo pie, which was incredible. My boyfriend had spiced lamb fritters (listed as kefte on the menu) which were served with some veggies. Also, all entrees are served with a small salad, which helps with the timing of the meal in terms of giving you a little time to digest. Several types of warm bread are also served.

For an entree, I had the duck confit, which was just incredible. The skin was crispy but the delicious fat made it melt in your mouth and it was beautifully flavored. It was served with a tart chutney, shredded potato "pie," and broccoli. My bf had the Slovenian style pork, which was served on a bed of sauerkraut, and accompanied by brussels sprouts, celery root, and other veggies, along with homemade, toothsome spaetzle.

For dessert, we shared the triple coconut cream pie, rich, creamy, with a cloud of whipped cream, a perfect ending to the meal.

Our only complaint is one that only fellow CHs can help with, and that is the fact that it was almost empty and thus really really quiet. Two other couples eventually came in for dinner. The waiter (who my bf remembers as being the same as our last visit 2 years ago) is excellent, and Mr. Zeph himself is there greeting and chatting, and his wife is in the kitchen. The food is really remarkable, which we especially appreciated on such on a dreary wintry night.

  1. I admit the last time I ate there they were a fairly new restaurant in town.
    I ordered the seafood Lasagne, the seafood was cold and undercooked.they insisted on a re-do and it was the same.I never did make it back .I'm only a mile away.they are there more than 10 yrs now I'll have to try them again.

    1. I love Zeph's too. Were you there on a weeknight? Generally on weekends it is full--never packed, because they make sure not to overburden the kitchen. It's a rare weekend night when it isn't "reservations only."

      Also, Michael and Vicky Zeph are brother and sister, not husband and wife.

      Zeph's doesn't have to be only for special occasions!

      As for the person who wrote below about only go there shortly after it opened...really? It opened in 1989 or 1990. Considering all the superlatives people use to write about it here, two decades later, perhaps it's time for a second look?

        Thanks for the correction-- I assumed they were a husband/wife team. I wish I could edit my original post, as I don't mean to misinform.

        Yes, we went last night (Wednesday), so I figured the emptiness had to do with that, and also the fact that the weather was gross. I'm glad to hear it's more lively on the weekends.

      2. I'm glad you brought Zeph's up, this is the time of year especially that I love to go there. Last year in the cold weather I had their short ribs and they were out of this world. Do you remember seeing them on the menu recently? Thanks for the reminder.

            Glad to refresh your memory. :) The only beef dish I recall from the menu last night was steak au poivre.

              I went last night and it was as good as ever and they did indeed have the short ribs, they were as delicious as ever. They also had a Peekskill Cheese Steak, which was a rib eye with melted gorgonzola on it.

                Something about Zephs' really makes it perfect for a cold night. I gotta get there to try those short ribs.
