40th Birthday - Just the Guys

I'm surprising DH with a dinner out with some close friends around his 40th birthday. Any suggestions? We lived in the City years ago so the only places we really know of now are either corporate-ish expense account restaurants or "date" places. Any advice from some of you male Chow Hounders out there? A fun, guys place with good food & drink!

If you can get a reservation, Minetta Tavern is probably a good option - loud, excellent food, outstanding steak, good drinks, beautiful people to look at.

If they're big bourbon/whiskey/cigar people, bar and books on the UES is classy and very "leather-bound-books"/comfy chairs oriented as a starting point, and you can smoke cigars there.

What sort of "guy's place" were you thinking?

thanks for both recommendations. I'm looking into both. I've heard of MT but not of Freeman's.
